KTLA 5: Celebrating National Nurses Day at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles
On National Nurses Day, KTLA 5 reporter Megan Telles interviewed Cedars-Sinai gynecologic surgeon Mireille Truong, MD, and Gregory Jones, RN, injury prevention and outreach coordinator, about ways the medical center encourages continuous learning among staff, students and the public.
Truong told Telles that the hospital’s Women’s Guild Simulation Center for Advanced Clinical Skills—nicknamed the “Sim Center”—is where health professionals practice everything from basic first aid to complex surgical procedures. The center also provides realistic training experiences to students in Cedars-Sinai’s Youth Employment and Development program who are considering a career in medicine.
“It’s amazing how technology has evolved and all the capabilities. And now with the Cedars-Sinai Simulation Center, or other simulation centers, this really allows nurses, doctors and even high school students [to] get exposed to medicine, to health care,” Truong told Telles. “The benefit of having a Simulation Center is we get to practice all these skills outside of the Operating Room before we actually operate on a patient.”
Jones, a military veteran who leads classes in trauma care, told Telles that the center offers immersive courses to help doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, students and people in the community prepare to handle emergencies when they happen.
“We believe in ‘fight how you train, so you train how you fight,’” Jones said, referencing a military philosophy. “You want to make sure that you’re doing all those things in practice so that when the real thing happens, you’re ready. It’s something that’s not new to you. It’s how we’ve always practiced it. And that’s why we have the Sim Center.”
