Healthcare Innovation: Cedars-Sinai Boosts Innovation Efforts With Redesign Health
Healthcare Innovation and Fierce Healthcare recently interviewed Bardia Nabet, MPH, associate director of Digital Strategy and Business Development at Cedars-Sinai, about the hospital’s new Digital Innovation Platform, designed to create and scale startups developing digital solutions for major healthcare challenges.
Those digital solutions will initially target five areas of healthcare including personalized medicine, specialty care access, hospital workflow optimization, clinical decision support and improved care coordination.
Nabet told Healthcare Innovation the Digital Innovation Platform is different from the Cedars-Sinai Accelerator program, which supports external startups that already have products. Rather, he said, the new platform will partner entrepreneurs with Cedars-Sinai staff, investors, and a startup builder to create companies often based on ideas from Cedars-Sinai clinicians and staff members.
“We’re in the trenches right now looking at strategic areas that we want to go after, and then identifying internal capabilities, stakeholders, ideating with them, and looking at what solutions are out there,” Nabet said, adding that thematic areas will “continue to change over time, as new technologies get developed.”
Nabet told Fierce Healthcare Cedars-Sinai will support the new companies by giving them early funding, expert guidance and the chance to test their solutions in a real hospital setting.
“We’re focused on building companies from idea to launch: identifying core systemic problems, validating solutions internally and building companies where Cedars-Sinai is the first funder, customer and pilot site,” he said. “This gives us a unique ability to de-risk solutions early and build for real-world scale from day one.”
A key feature of the platform will be access to Cedars-Sinai’s large datasets that mimic real-world health information—helping the new companies design smarter tools and improve them with feedback from the hospital’s users.
