Becker’s Healthcare Podcast: Motz Feinberg on Transforming Supply Chain at Cedars-Sinai Health System
Becker’s Healthcare Podcast recently interviewed Motz Feinberg, vice president and chief supply chain officer at Cedars-Sinai, about how the health system is using technology and AI to transform supply chain operations and better support clinical teams.
Feinberg told podcast host Laura Dyrda, vice president and editor-in-chief at Becker’s Healthcare, that AI is helping employees feel more productive, less stressed and better able to manage increasing demands in a more flexible and meaningful way that “really helps them feel that they’re adding value.”
One example, he said, is the development of an AI tool for the health system that can quickly answer nurses’ questions about product locations, availability and substitutes, “which really streamlines all those communications tremendously.”
Feinberg told Dyrda the health system also is using AI for basic supply chain functions that can be tedious and time-consuming, such as reading contracts and extracting payment terms.
He said he himself often uses AI. He finds that becoming acquainted with the technology “helps people at least get over the barrier of, ‘Hey, this is something that is a threat to me,’ versus, ‘This is something that can help me grow.’”
Feinberg told Dyrda a supply chain challenge moving forward is seamlessly balancing multiple demands across the health system. He compared supply chain to blood in the body, noting that both are ubiquitous, ensuring that every part of an organization—or body—gets what it needs.
“Generally, people don’t think a lot about supply chain until there’s a problem,” Feinberg told Dyrda.
