Cedars-Sinai Behavioral Health Experts Can Explain Why Youth May Be Vulnerable to Problematic Social Media Use

Following Meta’s proposed settlement of up to $17.1 billion over allegations that its platforms harmed young people, Cedars-Sinai Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Neurosciences psychiatrist Nathalie Murphy, MD, and addiction psychiatry expert Itai Danovitch, MD, are available for interviews to discuss what science has found out about compulsive social media and smartphone use, including potential risks for young people and practical guidance for parents.

Danovitch and Murphy can discuss:

  • How social media engages the brain and whether compulsive use shares characteristics with substance-related and other addictive disorders
  • What research shows about the relationship between social media use and mental health, self-esteem and self-worth
  • Why children and adolescents may be more vulnerable than adults to the potential harms of social media
  • How performing for a constant online audience can influence identity development during adolescence
  • How frequent social media use may affect young people’s ability to sustain attention, tolerate boredom and focus on tasks that require deep concentration
  • Practical steps parents can take to encourage healthier social media habits and protect young users
