Pulmonary Embolism and DVT: Cedars-Sinai Expert on What to Know
Victor Tapson, MD, Can Explain Warning Signs, Risk Factors, Treatment and Prevention After Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts Diagnosed With Blood Clots in Both Lungs
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, and bilateral pulmonary emboli—serious blood clot conditions that have sidelined him for the remainder of the 2026 NFL season.
Victor Tapson, MD, a leading pulmonary embolism expert and a professor of Medicine at Cedars-Sinai, is available to discuss what the public should know about DVT and pulmonary embolism, why these conditions can be difficult to recognize, and why prompt evaluation and treatment matter.
DVT is a blood clot that forms in a blood vessel, often in the leg. If part of the clot breaks away and travels to an artery in the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism—a potentially life-threatening blockage of blood flow.
For about 25% of patients with a pulmonary embolism, sudden death is the first symptom of their condition.
Tapson, also an NBA panel member for issues related to deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, can discuss:
- How DVT and pulmonary embolism are connected
- Common symptoms and warning signs
- Risk factors, including injury, travel, dehydration and surgery
- How the conditions are diagnosed and treated
- Prognosis and recovery
- What athletes, teams and the public can do to reduce the risk of blood clots and recognize symptoms early
