Healthcare IT News: Cedars-Sinai CIO’s Tips to Ensure GenAI Is Fair, Appropriate, Valid, Effective and Safe
Healthcare IT News recently interviewed Craig Kwiatkowski, PharmD, senior vice president and chief information officer at Cedars-Sinai, about how the health system uses artificial intelligence (AI) to improve patient care and streamline processes for healthcare providers.
Kwiatkowski cited Cedars-Sinai’s success with its AI-powered mobile app Cedars-Sinai Connect, which helps California patients easily access high-quality healthcare from home. The platform offers patients virtual appointments with physicians 24/7 via video. A chat feature gathers health details and symptoms from patients to help assess their medical concerns and presents that information to a clinician for review. The app uses AI to reduce administrative burdens, such as data entry, freeing physicians to focus more time on patient care.
Kwiatkowski told Bill Siwicki, managing editor of Healthcare IT News, that when it comes to adopting generative AI—a newer type of artificial intelligence that can help create text messages, videos and other content—Cedars-Sinai is intentional and deliberate.
“We’re focusing on organizing our approach around the FAVES principles—fair, appropriate, valid, effective and safe—and making sure we understand how these tools work and function in the short term and long term,” Kwiatkowski said.
“We’re intentionally throttling adoption a bit, proceeding with caution, to ensure we’re deploying the solution safely and responsibly, which also actually helps from an adoption perspective.”
Kwiatkowski told Healthcare IT News that additional opportunities to use AI in improving the healthcare of the future are limitless.
“Candidly, I don’t see any silver bullets to solve for many of the challenges we face in the short term, but there’s incredible potential with these tools, the generative tools, in the intermediate-to-long term,” he said. “So, it’ll be fun to work through those.”
