Inspiring the Next Generation of Black Healthcare Leaders
Media Invited to Cover an Immersive Day of Mentorship and Activities to Introduce Black Middle and High School-Age Students to Careers in Medicine
WHAT
Cedars-Sinai is striving to expand healthcare career pathways for Black youth by hosting its second annual Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit.
Working in partnership with the group Black Men in White Coats, Cedars-Sinai is planning a day of mentorship, hands-on activities and networking opportunities with Black physicians—with the goal of introducing Black middle school and high school students to careers in medicine.
Throughout the day, students will rotate through interactive stations to learn various aspects of clinical care and research. This will include demonstrations of and education about respiratory therapy, laparoscopic surgery, sports medicine, AI technology, imaging, trauma and more.
Attendees will meet internal medicine physicians, surgical oncologists, anesthesiologists, nursing educators, researchers, as well as Dale Okorodudu, MD, the founder of Black Men in White Coats.
The nonprofit group aims to address the critical issue of declining medical school applications from Black men, which has far-reaching implications for efforts to reduce racial disparities in the delivery of healthcare.
Cedars-Sinai also is hosting the event in collaboration with BlackDoctor.org and Charles R. Drew University.
