Genitourinary Pathology Rotation
P504S/34βE12/p63 immuno stain for prostate intraepithelial neoplasia
The goals of this rotation are for the resident to:
- Gain knowledge of the normal anatomy and pathology of neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders of the bladder, ureter, prostate, testes, penis and kidneys.
- Understand the role and application of cancer templates and report formatting.
Specimens come from the Urologic Oncology Program at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, and from referring urologists.
Case Mix
The material includes a wide variety of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions of the genitourinary tract, with approximately 1,700 specimens annually. Non-neoplastic nephrectomy specimens are included in the renal pathology rotation. In addition, there are study sets containing all important GU pathology disease entities.
Rotation Structure
During the one-month rotation, residents are intricately involved in learning how to provide excellent clinical care by understanding normal and abnormal morphology, reviewing clinical cases daily, ordering appropriate special stains, constructing comprehensive pathology reports including grading and staging criteria, and communicating with clinicians.
Daily Schedule
This rotation is based on a two-day cycle:
- First day
- Morning GU biopsy sign-out
- Gross GU specimens after morning sign-out is completed
- Second day
- Morning GU biopsy sign-out
- Afternoon sign-out of grossed GU surgical specimens (with same attending)
- Review important GU lesions in study sets
Subspecialty Conferences
- Genitourinary Tumor Board, every other Monday
Research Opportunities
There are ample opportunities for clinical and translational research in GU pathology with a focus on prostate cancer, and to interface with molecular or translational pathology.
