CBS 2 recently featured Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in its “Look At This!” segment, which spotlights places of interest in Southern California.

CBS 2 reporter Desmond Shaw noted that Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is recognized around the world for outstanding patient care.

“They have top 10 rankings from U.S. News & World Report in cardiology, orthopedics, geriatrics and so many other fields,” Shaw said. “They're also international leaders in biomedical research, including in areas like diabetes, genetics, cancer and cardiac arrest.”

Shaw shared the history of Cedars-Sinai, which began as Kaspare Cohn Hospital in a Victorian house near downtown Los Angeles in 1902.

“It began with only 12 beds and one of L.A.’s first female doctors, Dr. Sarah Vasen, as its medical director, and services [were] initially free of charge to patients,” Shaw said.

He added that after two location changes, Kaspare Cohn Hospital became Cedars of Lebanon, “a biblical reference to the believed healing powers of Lebanese cedar branches.”

Shaw noted that Cedars of Lebanon merged with another Jewish hospital, Mount Sinai, to become Cedars-Sinai in 1961. A decade later, construction began on what is now Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

“The huge main building [was] finished in 1976 with more than a million and a half square feet, and it’s only grown larger and more modern with time,” Shaw said. “It's hard not to argue that they are simply the best at medical care, and it all began with the donation of a two-story Victorian home over 100 years ago.”
