Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) provide care to critically ill and injured patients. While this traditionally occurs outside the hospital, EMTs may also work in the hospital providing basic care in various settings such as the Emergency Department. This program will provide classroom and hands-on training to teach you the necessary skills to treat patients with a wide range of non-acute to life-threatening illnesses and injuries. You will learn how EMTs function as part of emergency medical services (EMS) under medical oversight. This will include practicing skills using various techniques and equipment that help bridge the gap between the scene and hospital. This will include but is not limited to performing a primary and secondary assessment, obtaining vital signs, extricating patients from vehicles, providing lifesaving medications and managing airways. Skills training will be done using various forms of simulation, including high-fidelity manikins that breath, talk and have pulses to help create an immersive learning environment. Additionally, skills rotations will be done in the Emergency Department and with various EMS agencies.

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program is a nationally recognized training curriculum that prepares students to receive this certification. Our program will last for 16 weeks and will be offered twice a year. The program will be offered in a hybrid model which will include 178 hours of didactic work to be conducted online and 64 hours of skills training to be performed on-site in the Simulation Center. Additionally, there will be 96 hours of clinical rotations which will be conducted on-site at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the Emergency Department, and with various external emergency medical services (EMS) that provide 911 and patient transport services. Skills EMTs may perform under the supervision of a preceptor include but are not limited to performing a patient assessment, obtaining vital signs, assisting patients with medication self-administration including nitroglycerin, epi pens, oral glucose, oxygen and aspirin. Additional skills may include wound care, splinting of injured limbs, glucose checks and assisting with obtaining a 12-lead ECG.

Tuition Fee $2,500.00

Includes: Background check, book and online material, uniform, voucher to take the National Registry EMT exam, basic equipment (PPE pouch, trauma shears, blood pressure cuff, and a stethoscope).

• Online sessions with in-person sessions vary per semester (February will be Thursday 4-10 p.m.)
  
• Clinical rotations: total of five clinical rotations
• Four clinical 8-hour shifts
• One clinical 4-hour shift
