Registration Opens for Cedars-Sinai’s 10th Annual Run for Her® 5K Run and Friendship Walk

Milestone Celebration Aimed at Educating Public and Funding Ovarian Cancer Research Inspires Sister Events in New York and San Francisco

Los Angeles - Aug. 7, 2014 – Registration is open for the 10th annual Run for Her® 5K Run and Friendship Walk, one of the nation's premier events to raise public awareness and research funds for the fight against ovarian cancer. The flagship Los Angeles event will be held Sunday, Nov. 9, in Pan Pacific Park.

Run for Her proceeds support ovarian cancer research and public education projects for the Women's Cancer Program at the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute.

The popularity of the annual run-walk inspired supporters last year to establish a sister event in New York. This year, New York will again host a Run for Her gathering on Sept. 6, while the San Francisco Bay Area will host its first run/walk on Sept. 20.

Participants don't need to be present – or even awake – to support the cause. Supporters anywhere can join Run for Her's Sleepwalkers Around the World program and participate in any, or all, 2014 Run for Her events. In 2013, the Sleepwalkers event garnered supporters from all 50 states and from 15 countries.

"The 10th anniversary of Run for Her is a timely reminder of how far we've run and how much farther we need to go to win this race," said Beth Y. Karlan, MD, director of the Women's Cancer Program at the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute. "The awareness and research supported by our Run for Her community has made an impact on the lives of thousands of women and their families. And we will continue running until we find reliable means for ovarian cancer early detection, prevention and even future cures."

Run for Her was founded in 2005 by Kelli Sargent, in honor of her mother, Nanci Sargent, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer six years ago. "I never expected Run for Her to be what it is today," said Kelli Sargent. "Over the past 10 years, I have seen Run for Her blossom into one of the largest ovarian cancer run-walks in the world. We are excited to expand from our roots in Los Angeles and bring Run for Her to different parts of the world, sharing the importance of advancing medical discoveries and treatments that benefit women everywhere."

Ovarian cancer is the fifth-leading cause of cancer deaths among women. Karlan said many women aren't aware of the common symptoms, which can be subtle and include consistent bloating, pelvic pain and frequent urination.

"Through Run for Her, we have had tremendous success in educating women to be aware of the symptoms because early detection can save lives," Karlan said.

Early registration is now available for all Run for Her events. Participants can register online at runforher.com or by mail at:
