Cedars-Sinai OB Anesthesiology Designated a Center of Excellence

Society for Obstetric Anesthesiology and Perinatology Recognizes Cedars-Sinai for Quality Care

The Cedars-Sinai Department of Anesthesiology has been named a Center of Excellence for obstetric anesthesia care by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesiology and Perinatology.

Cedars-Sinai is the only medical center in Los Angeles County to earn the distinction and one of 39 institutions across the country awarded the designation.

"We are extremely proud to be one of the select group of medical centers to receive this prestigious honor," said James Grant, MD, MBA, chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Cedars-Sinai and physician executive in Perioperative Services. "Under the superb leadership of Mark Zakowski, MD, the obstetric anesthesiology team at Cedars-Sinai is undoubtedly best in class.”

To be designated a Center of Excellence, institutions and programs are required to meet specific criteria established by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesiology and Perinatology. These include experience and qualifications of providers, obstetric emergency management, cesarean delivery and labor analgesia care, and quality assurance and patient follow-up systems.

Zakowski said the honor is particularly meaningful because it comes from a national society that specializes in obstetric anesthesia, made up of highly respected medical and science professionals across the country.

"Anesthesiologists play a crucial role during the obstetric patient experience, which is why we are committed to bringing collaborative spirit, dedication to excellence and evidenced-based practices to all our patients at Cedars-Sinai,” said Mark Zakowski, MD, clinical director of Obstetric Anesthesiology and program director of the Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship Program at Cedars-Sinai. "I am honored to work amongst a world-class team."

The society was created to improve pregnancy-related outcomes of women and neonates through the support of obstetric anesthesiology research, education and promotion of excellence in clinical anesthesia care. The organization comprises anesthesiologists, obstetricians, pediatricians and scientists who exemplify practices and protocols that drive the highest standards of care.
