Becker’s Hospital Review: The ROI on AI for Nurses at Cedars-Sinai
Becker’s Hospital Review recently interviewed Rachel Coren, MPH, MS, vice president and associate chief intelligence officer at Cedars-Sinai, about a new artificial intelligence (AI) mobile app for nurses that aims to enhance wellbeing and patient care by reducing administrative tasks.
Cedars-Sinai clinicians helped develop the Aiva Nurse Assistant app, and now a nursing unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is the first to test the tool. The app transcribes a nurse’s voice dictation, and after the nurse has reviewed it for accuracy, adds it to the patient’s electronic health record.
Coren told Becker’s Hospital Review the return-on-investment already appears strong. Some nurses have reduced their overtime hours by decreasing time spent on documentation. And patients appear to be benefitting when nurses can devote more time to hands-on care.
“And while we aren’t able to directly correlate, we have seen a very positive increase in our patient experience outcomes on this pilot unit,” she said. “This reinforces our long-standing belief and commitment that when you care for your clinicians, who in turn care for your patients, you get better outcomes.”
Coren told Becker’s Hospital Review the medical center is careful and deliberate when implementing AI technologies to ensure they are ethically sound and without bias.
“We’re also tracking the data on how many times a nurse rejects that summary of the conversation to make sure the tool is accurately capturing what is being shared,” she said. “Thus far, the rejection rates remain very low, so that’s positive for us, but it’s something we’re going to continue to track very closely.”
