Smoking and Your Health
Smoking causes breathing problems, heart disease, and cancer.
Thousands of chemicals are in cigarette smoke. At least 60 of them cause cancer. Smoking is linked to many types of cancer. Smoking is the cause of a third of all cancer deaths in this country and 90% of all lung cancers.
Smoking causes chronic obstructive pulmonay disease (COPD). This disease includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. COPD is the third leading cause of death in the U.S.
Smoking raises the risk for heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in this country. It also causes cholesterol to build up in blood vessels. That makes them narrower. Smoking makes it easier for blood to clot. These clots can block blood from getting to the lungs or the brain.
Smoking harms people around you who are exposed to your smoke. Children who breathe in your smoke are more likely to get bronchitis, pneumonia, and ear infections.
