Intraoperative Radiation Therapy

Overview

What Is Intraoperative Radiation Therapy?

Intraoperative radiation therapy is radiation treatment that takes place in the operating room immediately after tumor removal. Patients receive their entire course of radiation therapy in one dose, while still under anesthesia.

Doctors recommend intraoperative radiation therapy for early-stage cancer, especially breast cancer and after a lumpectomy. It requires fewer radiation treatments and lowers the risk of exposure to healthy tissue and organs.

In most cases, patients do not have to return for more radiation therapy.

What to Expect

Intraoperative radiation therapy takes place during surgery immediately after a tumor is removed.
