Open Doors Exhibition
For generations, artists have reflected on and referred to the work of their predecessors as blueprints that guide them toward new possibilities. This exhibition is a timeless cross-generational discourse between Black artists operating in both social and aesthetic contexts. From figuration to abstraction, contributing artists share a communal dialogue with their forebearers and successors—acknowledging those that carved their path and centering concerns rooted in Black experiences.
Portrayals of Black subjects, life and history showcase the breadth, multidimensionality and wholeness of Black life, past and present. Highlighting a spectrum of artists within various generations not only reflects a spectrum of the community—it is also a visual reclamation of Black history as well as an observance of their inspirations.
Cedars-Sinai aims to celebrate past artists who have opened doors, while amplifying the present artists who propel their collective vision and values forward. We hope this exhibition serves as an entry point to shift how we all engage in the world, with the goal of enlightening and inspiring viewers of all backgrounds.
Somebody had to open the door and I was there to open the door...now the door is open for you to come in.”
—Charles White
