Learn what to expect from Cedars-Sinai’s Virtual Second Opinion timeline, from case submission to expert report and educational session.
Starting the Virtual Second Opinion process can feel like a big step. Knowing what to expect at each stage can help you feel more at ease. While each case is unique, most participants follow a clear, supportive timeline.
Step 1: Submit
Once you sign up for a Cedars-Sinai Virtual Second Opinion, you’ll complete a set of forms that allow us to understand the general information about your case and begin collecting your relevant medical records. This is also your chance to share specific details about your medical history and specify three key questions you’d like the expert doctor to address in your second opinion report.
Within one business day, a program coordinator will call you to confirm your condition and resolve any questions you may have. You’ll then schedule your nurse intake call and, if necessary, complete a condition-specific questionnaire. You can also start uploading any relevant medical records to our secure system.
Step 2: Nurse Intake Call
During your scheduled nurse intake call, a dedicated nurse coordinator will review your medical history and current condition in detail. This conversation helps us understand your needs and ensures we connect you with the right specialist for your case.
Step 3: Records Collection and Expert Matching
After gathering your medical records, our clinical team reviews your case and matches you with an expert doctor who is experienced in your specific condition. The match is based on your diagnosis, medical history and the three questions you submitted. Read our article on how expert matching works.
Step 4: Report Preparation
Your assigned expert doctor will thoroughly review your records and prepare a written second opinion report tailored to your case. The report includes responses to your three questions and relevant medical insights to help you make more informed decisions about your care.
Step 5: Virtual Educational Session
After receiving your report, you’ll have your virtual educational session with the expert doctor who reviewed your case. During this session, you can discuss the report in detail and ask follow-up questions based on the doctor’s insights.
Step 6: After the Session
With the second opinion report and educational session complete, you can consider your next steps. Whether you choose to seek care at Cedars-Sinai, continue with your current doctor or pursue other local options, you’ll have the clarity and confidence to make well-informed decisions about your health.
Cedars-Sinai offers Virtual Second Opinions for hundreds of conditions. We’re here to guide you through each step with transparency, support and expert insight.
