Research Areas
Dr Brownlee completed his cardiothoracic surgical training at the University of Chicago. During his time there, he also completed the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Robotics Fellowship and the was selected for Medical Education, Research, Innovation, Teaching, and Scholarship (MERITS) Fellowship, which helps academic physicians hone the skills required for successful future careers as medical educators, scholars and leaders. His clinical specialties are focused in thoracic surgical oncology, specifically minimally invasive lung, esophageal and mediastinal surgery as well as endobronchial approaches to diagnosis and staging of thoracic malignancies. He is also board certified in general surgery. His research focuses include assessment of preoperative muscle density using CT morphomics, and the integration of technology into surgical education. He has a grant from the National Science Foundation and in conjunction with the Booth School of Business is investigating the use of app-based technology to help residents prepare for surgical procedures. He has authored multiple textbook chapters on topics in thoracic surgery and is a reviewer for The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and The New England Journal of Medicine. Dr Brownlee has a passion for surgical education and serves as a member of the American College of Surgeons Operative Decision Making Workforce.
