Cedars-Sinai is committed to finding a diagnosis for all of our patients. See answers to our most frequently asked questions below.

The Center for the Undiagnosed Patient (CUP) is a specialty clinic that evaluates patients with conditions that have defied current knowledge. Our goal is to achieve diagnosis and make recommendations for managing the condition.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Significant symptoms that have defied prior specialist evaluation
  • Abnormal laboratory findings that remain unexplained
  • Objective findings unexplained 
  • High suspicion of malignancy

Unlikely to be determined eligible:

  • Opioid dependency as primary problem
  • Post Lyme disease syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia/myofascial syndrome
  • Chronic depression or anxiety disorder as primary problem

Yes, we require a referral from a physician who is involved with your care and familiar with your condition. We do not accept referrals from a psychiatrist or psychologist.

We accept PPO plans. Prior authorization is required for HMO plans. Please be aware of your benefits as it pertains to your in-network and out-of-network costs, along with co-insurance and deductible. For more information on what is covered, please contact your insurance company.

Your application will be evaluated by our multidisciplinary team prior to your first in-person visit with one of our lead internists. Subsequent visits with a specialist(s) may be indicated.

This fee covers the initial phone visit, a detailed review of your medical records, and our faculty team meeting that addresses the specifics of your condition. This unique service is not covered by insurance. If you are determined eligible, your insurance will be billed for in-person visits. Patients are responsible for paying any insurance copays.

Contact the offices of your physicians and ask them to email copies of your records to our center. Paper records can be mailed to our center, but we encourage you to send a digital file. If you are a Cedars-Sinai patient, your records are accessible through our electronic medical record system.

Copies of all records pertinent to your condition should be sent to the center.

No, we will not return any paper records to you, so please send copies only. Discs that include imaging can be picked up directly from our medical center after they have been reviewed by our specialists.

After your medical records have been submitted and the phone visit is completed, the medical record review takes approximately 2-3 weeks. You will then receive an email or call from the center with a response regarding your eligibility.

Travels costs are not covered by Cedars-Sinai.

As a patient, you can expect the following:

  1. Phone visit and record review.
  2. If determined eligible, you will be scheduled for an in-person visit.
  3. Specialist visits will be scheduled by our center, and these appointments will be coordinated on your behalf.
  4. At the close of your evaluation at our center, our clinical team will address your evaluation and will provide you with an impression and conclusions.
