• Acute liver failure, a condition in which the liver deteriorates within a short period of time (weeks or even days). Cedars-Sinai's team of experts has pioneered new ways to manage this potentially life-threatening disease.
• Autoimmune chronic active hepatitis. In some patients, an overactive immune system attacks the liver and causes ongoing inflammation, which slowly damages the organ.
• Viral hepatitis. Hepatitis viruses can create an inflamed liver. While some patients experience only minor illness, others with hepatitis B and C are in grave danger of fatal liver failure.
• Alcoholic hepatitis. Overuse of alcohol over a long period can have a negative effect on liver cells. Inflammation occurs and fatty tissue builds up in the liver.
• Biliary cirrhosis, which causes blockages and scarring in the bile ducts (tubes carrying bile to the gallbladder and small intestine) inside the liver.

• Budd-Chiari syndrome. A rare disorder, this condition results from blood clots that block the large veins in the liver.
• Drug-induced hepatotoxicity. Certain drugs taken may be toxic to the liver and cause damage.
