Our professionals address the full spectrum of liver conditions and diseases. Their experience and visionary research ensure that patients receive the most sophisticated and compassionate care available.

  • Acute liver failure, a condition in which the liver deteriorates within a short period of time (weeks or even days). Cedars-Sinai's team of experts has pioneered new ways to manage this potentially life-threatening disease.
  • Autoimmune chronic active hepatitis. In some patients, an overactive immune system attacks the liver and causes ongoing inflammation, which slowly damages the organ.
  • Viral hepatitis. Hepatitis viruses can create an inflamed liver. While some patients experience only minor illness, others with hepatitis B and C are in grave danger of fatal liver failure.
  • Alcoholic hepatitis. Overuse of alcohol over a long period can have a negative effect on liver cells. Inflammation occurs and fatty tissue builds up in the liver.
  • Biliary cirrhosis, which causes blockages and scarring in the bile ducts (tubes carrying bile to the gallbladder and small intestine) inside the liver.
  • Biliary tract diseases, affecting the gallbladder
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis, a condition which eventually destroys the bile ducts.
  • Liver cancer. In primary liver cancer, malignant cells begin growing in the various tissues and components of the liver, largely due to the presence of hepatitis (B or C) or cirrhosis. Cancer that has originated in other parts of the body may spread to attack the liver.
  • Budd-Chiari syndrome. A rare disorder, this condition results from blood clots that block the large veins in the liver.
  • Drug-induced hepatotoxicity. Certain drugs taken may be toxic to the liver and cause damage.
  • Fatty liver disease. About 20% of Americans suffer from this condition, often caused by obesity, diabetes or other health problems. Among the medical specialists at Cedars-Sinai are professionals recognized for their special expertise on diagnosing and treating fatty liver disease.
