Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Team (START) (IRB no. 00000515)
Summary
The purpose of this study is to determine whether a special care team called the Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Team (START) can help people with problems related to opioid use. The START will offer assessment and treatment of problems related to opioid use while patients are in the hospital and will assist with referral for continuing care after discharge.
Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either usual care or START care. All participants will be interviewed at the beginning of their hospital stay and 1 month after hospital discharge. Participants in the START group will talk with a care manager and addiction medicine specialist while they are in the hospital, in addition to once a week for 4 weeks after discharge. Participants may be offered medications designed to treat opioid use disorder; however, there is no requirement to take medications in either the START or the usual care group.
