Full Study Name:

Pilot Test of a Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Team (START) for Medical Inpatients with Opioid and Alcohol Use Disorders (IRB no. 0000051)

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether a specially trained psychiatrist and care manager, both members of the Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Team (START), can help improve care for people with substance use disorders. Researchers will compare START to standard care.

Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups. In the first group, patients will receive standard care. Patients in standard care may or may not receive guidance regarding their substance use, and the patient may or may not be offered medication and other treatment for substance use. In the second group (START care), a care manager and an addiction medicine specialist, who are both experts in helping people with substance use problems, will talk to the patient about their substance use and present treatment options. They will also provide focused discharge and follow-up planning to help the patient link to substance use treatment after discharge if desired, in addition to well-established medications that can help reduce drinking and opioid use (if appropriate and desired).
