Pediatric Bowel Management

The Cedars-Sinai Pediatric Bowel Management Program works with children, young adults and families to develop individualized programs to achieve predictable, regular bowel movements as well as eliminate fecal incontinence and the need for diapers.

In children, fecal incontinence may result from various causes including: congenital conditions, diarrhea, constipation, muscle damage or weakness. Congenital conditions, such as anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung's disease, spina bifida, imperforate anus or spinal defects, may affect the ability of the bowel to function normally from childbirth.

Bowel incontinence ranges from an occasional leakage of stool while passing gas to a complete loss of bowel control. If left untreated, bowel-control problems in children and young adults can result in social isolation, low self-esteem and a diminished quality of life.

Cedars-Sinai's program consists of a multidisciplinary team that includes pediatric surgeons with expertise in medical and surgical management, specially trained nurses and dietitians as well as direct access to specialists in gastroenterology, imaging, urology, gynecology, orthopedics, nephrology and neurology. This allows us to care for young patients with especially complex or challenging conditions.
