You may be surprised to learn that a stroke can happen to a child. Stroke is a growing problem that can affect children of all ages. At Cedars-Sinai, your child is in capable hands. We have one of the largest stroke programs in California and one of the country's few pediatric stroke specialists. Doctors from all over the L.A. area put their trust in our care.
Our Approach to Treating Stroke in Children
The blood vessels in a child's brain are different and much smaller than an adult's. These differences are why children should receive care from an experienced pediatric stroke team.
At Cedars-Sinai, our team uses special pediatric instruments and has decades of experience navigating the blood vessels of a child's brain. These capabilities lead to safe procedures and successful stroke treatments in children.
Our pediatric stroke experts specialize in brain imaging and vascular disease. We can detect the precise location of the problem and deliver treatments to the right spot. Our experts also developed pediatric tools and techniques for restoring blood flow to the brain.
Our team works alongside other Cedars-Sinai experts to care for children with medical problems that increase their risk of stroke. For example, our team is on standby to deliver emergency care to children who experience a stroke after a heart procedure.
We teach doctors all over the country about pediatric stroke treatment. We also serve on committees of professional associations dedicated to improving stroke care.
Pediatric Stroke Treatment
If your child comes to the Cedars-Sinai Emergency Department with stroke symptoms, a team of specialists is at his or her side in minutes. And if your child experiences a stroke after being admitted to Cedars-Sinai for another problem, we'll provide the same rapid response.
Our pediatric stroke services include:
- Emergency care: When a child experiences a stroke, we deliver treatments as quickly as possible—usually within a few hours of when symptoms start.
- Endovascular neurosurgery: Our experts use a small, hollow tube (catheter) and tiny instruments to enter an incision in the groin and access the brain. Using advanced endovascular techniques, we navigate to the affected arteries and deliver targeted treatments. Endovascular procedures help restore blood flow to the brain while minimizing the risk of complications. Learn more about pediatric neurovascular surgery.
- Recovery services: The pediatric intensive care unit helps children recover after emergency stroke treatment. We also perform additional tests if necessary to learn more about what caused the stroke. Read more about our pediatric intensive care unit.
- Preventive care: We provide regular monitoring, including imaging tests, to assess blood flow to the brain. We may also perform procedures that use other blood vessels to improve blood flow to the brain. These services can lower your child's risk of a future stroke.
