Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease

At Cedars-Sinai, children with congenital heart disease are in caring and capable hands. We are among select programs on the West Coast delivering comprehensive care, including evaluation and treatment of life-threatening heart defects.

Highlights of our program include:

Senior attending level physicians care for our patients every step up the way allowing us to offer a level of care unmatched at most congenital heart centers.

Cutting-edge therapies not available elsewhere are available within the Guerin Family Congenital Heart Program and Smidt Heart Institute.

Family-centered services with specific attention paid to the needs of the entire family beginning at birth. We are one of the few hospitals where newborns can stay in the same hospital they were born in, with their parents.

Lifelong care, conducted by a single team who has known your child and their specific condition their whole life as opposed to transferring care once they reach adulthood to an entirely new group.

Comprehensive Care for Heart Problems in Children

The best congenital heart disease care starts with a thorough evaluation, and that’s what your child receives. Our team includes pediatric cardiac imaging experts and internationally renowned specialists, so you can count on us for an accurate diagnosis. We also provide second opinions to families and referring providers throughout the region.

Cedars-Sinai offers the full range of testing options, including:

Cardiac catheterization

While most cardiac catheterizations we perform involve an intervention (minimally invasive repair), at times this powerful tool can still be used to provide or enhance a specific diagnosis.

Pediatric cardiac imaging studies

We conduct specialized studies, including cardiac CT scan and cardiac MRI, to get detailed images of the heart structure and blood vessels. For transesophageal echocardiography, we slide a narrow imaging device down the throat, close to the heart. The device captures images from inside the body for a clearer view of problem areas. Learn more about transesophageal echocardiography.

Conditions We Treat

  • Arrhythmias
  • Coarctation of the aorta
  • Double outlet right ventricle
  • Hypoplastic left heart syndrome
  • Mital valve disease
  • Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)
  • Pulmonary artery stenosis
  • Tetralogy of Fallot
  • Tricuspid atresia

Additional Services

At Cedars-Sinai, congenital heart disease patients have access to highly skilled and experienced heart specialists through every phase of life.

We frequently diagnose congenital heart problems before a child is born. Our services include imaging from a team specializing in fetal cardiac studies (fetal echocardiogram) and genetic testing. Early diagnosis helps us coordinate with high-risk pregnancy experts for a safe delivery and timely newborn care, all within the same institution.

Doctors specializing in adult congenital heart disease provide ongoing monitoring and care. These experts are part of the same team as our pediatric specialists providing seamless communication throughout a patient’s lifetime. This collaboration gives our doctors firsthand knowledge of a patient’s medical history, providing a smooth transition from pediatric to adult care.

Our experts at Cedars-Sinai are advancing congenital heart disease care through research. In some cases, we have been the first in the world offering new techniques, including minimally invasive heart valve replacements. Your child may have the opportunity to join these efforts by participating in congenital heart disease clinical trials.
