Fatty Liver Diagnosis & Treatment
The Cedars-Sinai Fatty Liver Program can help you find the answers you're looking for. Our experienced providers are experts in diagnosing and treating fatty liver and NASH at every stage.
Fatty Liver Diagnosis
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease often has no symptoms, so finding a center with testing expertise is important for early diagnosis and treatment.
Our experts can help pinpoint the cause of unusual ultrasounds or abnormal liver enzymes that are often the first signs of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. We start by evaluating your:
- Health history
- Risk factor assessment
- Physical examination
- Blood tests
After collecting your baseline information, we use advanced imaging tests to help diagnose nonalcoholic fatty liver disease:
- Magnetic resonance elastography with fat fraction quantification (MRI-pdff) helps create a map of your liver to show areas that are growing fat and becoming stiff (a sign of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease).
- Transient elastography (Fibroscan®) is an ultrasound-like machine in the fatty liver program that quantifies fat and stiffness in the liver.
- Computerized tomography (CT) scan can help us see if the liver has excess fat or if it is enlarged, which may point to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
- Ultrasound shows areas of brightness and other signs of excess liver fat.
If the first tests aren't conclusive, we may need to perform a liver biopsy. During this outpatient procedure, our team removes a small sample of your liver tissue. We then analyze the sample to determine if there are signs of nonalcoholic liver disease. Learn more about our ultrasound-guided liver biopsy.
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Treatment
Our experts can help you adopt lifestyle changes to manage nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and improve your overall health.
Weight Loss and Exercise
Maintaining a healthy weight is key to successfully managing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Less fat in the body translates directly into less fat in the liver, reducing inflammation and scarring.
Our team of dietitians, physical therapists and experts at the Cedars-Sinai Weight Loss Center are here to help. We can develop a fatty liver diet and customize an exercise plan to help you reach the ideal weight and keep nonalcoholic fatty liver in check. Our bariatric surgeons also provide sophisticated weight loss procedures if rapid and significant weight loss is needed.
Liver Transplant for Cirrhosis
In severe cases of liver scarring (cirrhosis), you may need a liver transplant. Our team works with the expert liver transplant team at Cedars-Sinai to support you through the process. Together, we provide lifesaving procedures as well as support before, during and after a transplant.
