Colon Surgery

At Cedars-Sinai, we offer robotic and minimally invasive surgery to treat many colon conditions with less pain and scarring than traditional open surgery. We develop a care plan that helps you find relief for pain and other symptoms.

Why Colon Surgery?

The colon is part of the digestive system, helping the body process fluids and waste for elimination. At times, blockages, tissue masses called polyps, tumors or even small fluid sacs (diverticulitis) can stop the colon from working as it should. We use sophisticated surgical techniques to remove these obstructions, and if necessary, remove part of the colon.

Colon Conditions We Treat Surgically

Our experts operate on a wide range of colon conditions, including:

Colon Surgery We Perform at Cedars-Sinai

At Cedars-Sinai, our colorectal team uses advanced robotic and minimally invasive techniques that lead to a precise procedure and shorter recovery:

Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery with 3D cameras enables us to see and operate inside the body through tiny incisions, even in complex cases. We use robotic surgery to remove colorectal polyps and tumors, both cancerous and benign.

Minimally Invasive (Laparoscopic) Colectomy

Our surgeons use laparoscopic techniques that result in smaller scars, less pain and faster recovery. We use small, flexible instruments for procedures such as colectomies and colonoscopies.

Colonoscopy

We perform this outpatient procedure to help identify and remove colorectal polyps.

Colectomy

Certain conditions, especially colon cancer, require the removal of portions of the colon. If we need to remove large parts of the colon or the entire organ, our team also creates an alternate route for waste to leave the body. We will explore these options with you before surgery.

The type of procedure you need depends on several factors. Our team may recommend minimally invasive techniques or open surgery. We work with you to determine the type of procedure that fits your needs and will give you the best results.
