The U.S. News rankings, released Tuesday, are based on patient outcomes, patient experience, ability to handle complex medical conditions and a variety of other health-related measures.

The rankings signal to international patients that Cedars-Sinai meets rigorous standards for clinical excellence, research and innovation, providing further assurance that patients will receive world-class care from a trusted, globally recognized institution.

U.S. News selects the top-performing hospitals for the Honor Roll based on their high rankings and ratings in multiple specialties, procedures and conditions.

Ten Cedars-Sinai specialties made the list of top clinical programs in the U.S. Three of the specialties were ranked in the top five:

• Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery
• Gastroenterology & GI Surgery
• Orthopedics

Other top-ranked specialties in the U.S. included Cancer; Diabetes & Endocrinology; Geriatrics; Neurology & Neurosurgery; Obstetrics & Gynecology; Pulmonology & Lung Surgery; and Urology.

The new office will serve as the first point of contact for patients in Ecuador seeking Cedars-Sinai expert care. The team will assess patients to determine their medical needs and connect them with Cedars-Sinai specialists in cardiology, oncology, neurology and other areas of medicine. The goal is to broaden options for Ecuadorian patients who cannot receive specialized care near their home, said Heitham Hassoun, MD, chief executive of Cedars-Sinai International.

“We are pleased to build upon our strong relationships with Ecuadorian healthcare providers by establishing this office, which will help patients with complex medical conditions access leading-edge treatment and exceptional healthcare in Los Angeles,” Hassoun said.  

The new office is located in the Hospital de los Valles, with which Cedars-Sinai established a strategic collaboration more than two years ago. Experts at the two hospitals collaborate by sharing knowledge about advancements in research and clinical care, and through access to training opportunities. Cedars-Sinai physicians also conduct quality assessments at Hospital de los Valles to support its efforts in obtaining accreditations for specialty clinics.

The collaboration has helped Cedars-Sinai physicians become familiar with the Ecuadorian patient community and the hospital. The newly opened Cedars-Sinai office in Quito reflects Cedars-Sinai’s mission to enhance global collaboration and bring excellence in healthcare closer to our patients, wherever they are, said Nicole Dube-Rosson, director, Global Services Operations at Cedars-Sinai. 

“This new office demonstrates our continued investment in the Ecuadorian community’s health and our commitment to bolstering our presence in Latin America,” Rosson said. “We are honored for the opportunity to provide the patient-centered experience Cedars-Sinai is known for from the minute patients walk through the doors of our new office.”

Cedars-Sinai experts are participating in Abu Dhabi Global Health Week, April 15-17 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The conference is dedicated to fostering collaboration among clinicians and researchers, with the goal of enhancing healthcare worldwide.

This marks the second consecutive year that Cedars-Sinai International leaders are attending, underscoring Cedars-Sinai’s dedication to sharing medical innovations and learning from global partners. The team—located in Hall 6, Booth A32—will be available to discuss longevity, the impact of global collaboration, data-driven healthcare systems and other topics.

Kirkland will discuss his research on how targeting senescent cells with the class of drugs his team discovered, senolytics, might prevent, delay or treat a variety of diseases. “As we increase our understanding of agents that target aging processes and their effects, we hope there may be benefits for a range of human diseases and disorders,” Kirkland said.

Also, in collaboration with Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi, Dubovsky and Maxwell Nicholson, associate director of Patient Experience at Cedars-Sinai, will lead a group of patient experience experts from the region at a full-day workshop focused on cultivating meaningful patient experience strategies to build successful action plans.

A team of Cedars-Sinai experts will participate in Arab Health, Jan. 27-30, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as part of the healthcare system’s ongoing commitment to global collaboration and expansion.

The significant award recognizes Hassoun’s contributions to global healthcare, visionary leadership and experience in international patient services, hospital partnerships and academic medicine.

“The International Healthcare Leadership Award celebrates leaders whose commitment, values, and contributions have significantly and positively impacted the provision of healthcare across international borders,” said Jill Schwieters, chair of the organization’s board of directors. “Dr. Hassoun’s strategic vision and commitment to collaborative, culturally attuned care for diverse patient populations at Cedars-Sinai and abroad embody these values.” 

Hassoun will be presented with the award during the NCHL 2024 Gail L. Warden Leadership Excellence Award Celebration on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024, at the Field Museum in Chicago.

Hassoun joined Cedars-Sinai in 2018 as vice president and medical director of Cedars-Sinai International. He facilitated Cedars-Sinai’s first global partnership, The View Hospital in affiliation with Cedars-Sinai, located in Doha, Qatar. Hassoun has also led academic and strategic collaborations in China, Ecuador, Indonesia, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates. Hassoun has expanded Cedars-Sinai’s global footprint through regional offices in various countries, including China, Mexico, and Singapore, with additional offices in the planning stages.

“I am deeply honored to accept the 2024 NCHL International Healthcare Leadership Award. This recognition reflects the perseverance and dedication of the entire Cedars-Sinai International team, who tirelessly push for excellence in global healthcare,” Hassoun said. “Our collective efforts have successfully merged groundbreaking medical research with specialized care, establishing Cedars-Sinai as a leading healthcare destination for patients around the globe.”

In addition to leading Cedars-Sinai International, Hassoun is a professor of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai and is an active vascular and endovascular surgeon.

Hassoun serves on the Advisory Council of the United States Cooperative for International Patient Programs (USCIPP), a group of United States academic medical centers that work with international patients and hospitals, foreign governments, and other partners worldwide to improve global health and access to healthcare. Hassoun also recently joined the board of directors of Direct Relief, a leading institution in providing medical humanitarian aid to those in need across 88 countries and 55 U.S. states and territories.

One such expert is Clive Svendsen, PhD, executive director of the Board of Governors Regenerative Medicine Institute at Cedars-Sinai. During Svendsen’s session, “The Secret Life of Stem Cells: Pioneering the Future of Regenerative Medicine,” he will discuss the promise of stem cells for creating new models of human disease, treating degenerative diseases and improving health during aging. Svendsen will also discuss his collaboration with NASA, through which enhancing stem cell growth and tissue generation in space may lead to medical breakthroughs on earth.
