Cutting-Edge Research Focus of Fourth Annual Meeting of the Androgen Excess Society June 23 in Boston
Los Angeles - June 1, 2006 - The latest advances in the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of androgen excess (excess male hormone) disorders in women will be presented at the fourth annual meeting of the Androgen Excess Society June 23 at the Hyatt Regency Boston Financial District.
The Androgen Excess Society serves as an international forum for physicians and scientists interested in disorders of androgen excess such as polycystic ovary syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, idiopathic hirsutism and premature adrenarche. Polycystic ovary syndrome—the most common hormonal disorder in women—is associated with excess hair growth, infertility and irregular periods and an increased risk of insulin resistance, diabetes and heart disease.
Chairing this year’s program is Rogerio Lobo, M.D., Columbia University, and the international panel of speakers includes Fernand Labrie, M.D., Canada; Rob McLachlan, M.D., Australia; Héctor Escobar-Morreale, M.D., Spain; and William Rosner, M.D., Jan McAllister, M.D., and Sharon Oberfield, M.D., U.S. The society’s executive director is Ricardo Azziz, M.D., M.P.H., chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and director of the Center for Androgen-Related Disorders there.
Meeting topics will include use and abuse of anabolic steroids, the adrenal’s role in androgen excess in women, and measuring excessive androgen production. Presentations are also planned on pediatric antecedents of metabolic syndrome, signaling defects in the PCOS ovary, and weight issues in women with androgen excess.
The society, which encourages the involvement of young physicians and scientists in the field of androgen excess, awarded Young Investigator Travel Grants to the two top-scoring abstracts submitted by young investigators. Recipients are Mark O. Goodarzi, M.D., Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, and Nicolas Crisosto, M.D., University of Chile, Santiago, Chile.
