American Heart Association Presents Award of Meritorious Achievement to Eduardo Marban, M.D., Director of Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute

Marbán’s leadership in modernizing leading heart medicine journal to be recognized

Los Angeles – April 20, 2009 – Eduardo Marbán, M.D., Ph.D., the Director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, received today the American Heart Association’s Award of Meritorious Achievement at the AHA’s annual Awards Luncheon in Washington, D.C.

The Award of Meritorious Achievement is for distinguished service, a unique accomplishment, or an important contribution to American Heart Association national programs. Dr. Marban has been named one of its recipients for his innovative application of technology to support the AHA’s medical journals.

Marbán has served as editor of Circulation Research for 10 years. He reinvigorated the peer-review journal by modernizing the journal’s publishing processes and recruiting young doctors from top-tier institutions to join the Editorial Board. In so doing, he heightened the journal’s scientific standing as the leading peer-reviewed publication for basic cardiovascular science.

"The prestige of Circulation Research is directly attributable to Dr. Marban’s exemplary leadership as editor-in-chief. Having a premier scientific journal such as Circulation Research in our portfolio is of tremendous benefit to the American Heart Association," said Timothy Gardner, M.D., president of the American Heart Association. "In addition, Dr. Marban has volunteered countless hours to our mission through our Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences, various committees and as a Board member with our Mid-Atlantic Affiliate. In these roles he has demonstrated remarkable versatility, whether offering guidance for budget planning, designing programs for scientific meetings or providing insight for our focus on basic cardiovascular sciences."

“Eduardo Marbán is a global leader in Cardiology investigation,” said Shlomo Melmed, M.D., Director of the Burns and Allen Research Institute and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. “Dr. Marbán has established Circulation Research as a leader in science. As Director of the Cedars Sinai Heart Institute, he has demonstrated visionary leadership in cutting-edge, creative, scholarly achievement, integrated clinical heart services of the highest quality, and vital training programs for clinicians and scientists dedicated to curing heart disease.”
