Exercise in the Park

ABC7 fitness and nutrition reporter Lori Corbin recently joined the Cedars-Sinai Healthy Habits team for Exercise in the Park and shared her experience with her Facebook followers.

Corbin, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition, along with certifications in personal training and group exercise, was enthusiastic about the free fitness classes Cedars-Sinai has led for six years.

“I love this, this is so great,” Corbin says in the video. The exercise instructors “are speaking in both Spanish and English. The music is fun, the exercise is great and it’s an obviously well educated staff.”

The Healthy Habits fitness classes are open to the public every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning until mid-August. The one-hour classes begin at 8:30 a.m. and combine aerobics, stretching, strength training and Zumba.

“This started with parents, just like the ones back here who wanted to work out together,” Carolyn Buenaflor, Healthy Habits associate director, told Corbin. “So we started this in the summer and then, during the school year, we do a walking group within the schools.”

The classes are popular, attracting about 50 neighborhood residents every session, “even on a hot day,” Buenaflor said.

Cedars-Sinai initiated the Healthy Habits program to help educate our community about the importance of good nutrition and regular exercise. Healthy Habits instructors lead educational programs at 21 public elementary schools in underserved neighborhoods of Los Angeles.

The classes on Monday and Wednesday are held at Westside Neighborhood Park, located at 3085 Clyde Ave., Los Angeles, 90016.

The Tuesday and Thursday classes are held at the Vineyard Recreation Center, located at 2942 Vineyard Ave., Los Angeles, 90016.
