Specialty Training Programs

Internal and external registered nurses participate in the many specialty training programs that Cedars-Sinai offers. We encourage professional development and growth, and these courses help participants advance their nursing skills and expertise.

The educational curriculum in the Cedars-Sinai Operating Room Training Program provides a combination of clinical experience, didactic teaching and hands-on skills in our Simulation Center. The clinical experience is broad, voluminous and diverse in an extraordinary academic environment. Cedars-Sinai's Perioperative Services specializes in a wide range of surgical cases, including:

Operating Room

27 weeks (17 weeks of clinical rotations throughout the 6 different ORs, plus 10 weeks in the OR of hire).

3-weeks of general orientation, then weekly didactic/skills sessions during 27 weeks of clinical orientation. 

The course consists of clinical sessions, didactic sessions (using Lippincott and AORN Competency and Standards of Practice modules), and the Simulation Center for OR Skills days.

We train new graduate and internal experienced nurses and we've had a 92% retention rate since 2015. 

Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

14 weeks (6-week rotation through all the ICUs; 8-week rotation through all the PACUs). 

6 days (2 sessions per week for the first 3 weeks).

The course combines clinical sessions, simulation/skills review, and didactic classroom sessions with case studies.

Classroom sessions are also attended by the Critical Care interns.

The Ruth and Harry Roman Emergency Department at Cedars-Sinai provide emergency care to a diverse community of adult and pediatric patients. Cedars-Sinai is a Level I Trauma Center and a ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) and Stroke Receiving Center. Nurses receive training in emergency, triage and trauma care.

The first 8 weeks of the course mix didactic classroom/skills sessions, online modules, and clinical rotations.

The program has a 99% success rate and an 86% retention rate over a 5-year period.  Approximately 25% of ED nursing staffing is from the internship.

Cedars-Sinai's Critical Care Division is a tertiary academic program that specializes in:

Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Educators work alongside interns and provide additional training in their specialty. Cedars-Sinai is among the top-rated heart transplant centers in the world, and it's a Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center.

6 days (2 sessions per week for the first 3 weeks).

The course blends simulation, skills, discussion, and lecture sessions with case studies.

Internal and external nurse candidates are hired into specific ICUs. Candidates are selected from Torrance Memorial Medical Center and the PACU Internship Program.

Nearly 7,000 women experience low- and high-risk births at Cedars-Sinai every year. We care for laboring patients in our newly redesigned laboring rooms or operating rooms, and high-risk perinatal patients in our Maternal Fetal Care Unit.

13 weeks of orientation to both Labor & Delivery and the Maternal Fetal Care Unit.

The first week of the program is completely didactic. After that, there are eight 1-hour didactic sessions for the duration of the program.

The course is a blend of online content through AWHONN, unit-based skills training, interactive didactic sessions, and hands-on clinical training in five different practice areas.

The program incorporates diverse training opportunities because Labor & Delivery nurses are expected to function as labor nurse, circulating nurse, and triage nurse; perform resuscitation on newborns; and provide care for a wide range of high-risk, antepartum and postpartum patients.
