Program Testimonials

Louie Cao, MD

I'm grateful to be at Cedars Sinai for internal medicine residency. I've learned so much from our diverse patient population and the world class doctors that we work with in every setting, from primary care to the ICU. Our attendings create an educational and nonjudgmental environment and place a strong emphasis on education. Being at one of the top hospitals exposes us to diseases and therapies that are not seen anywhere else. The ample opportunities to get involved in research with great mentors have prepared me well as I prepare for fellowship. Most importantly, I felt very supported by my co-residents from my first day as an intern and I've built lifelong friendships here."

First and foremost, I am so proud to be apart of our Internal Medicine residency family, where we all promote a collaborative, supportive, and nurturing environment. It is such a joy to see my friends at work, even when we have hard days in the MICU and need to go to the cafeteria to get ice cream for our wellness. By serving on our housestaff committee, I am always excited about advocating for our residents and fellows through initiatives such as getting “Physician” badge buddies. Our mentors are worldwide experts, and we get to see cutting-edge medicine that elevates the boundaries of clinical practice.

From serving a diverse patient population on our med teaching teams, I find our hands-on teaching approach has helped me become a confident senior resident for my interns and medical students on my team. Outside the hospital, I am so happy to be a short drive away from my family in San Gabriel Valley and to go to the endless amazing restaurants in Los Angeles."

I feel well integrated into the Cedars-Sinai medical system and the internal medicine program. My co-residents have created an environment of camaraderie and inclusivity, and the program leadership has supported my growth from an intern to a senior resident. I feel a sense of warmth and kindness with all of my classmates. We look out for ways to help each other. The training is rigorous and rewarding, showing me more about real-world medicine than I had expected. The faculty implicitly and explicitly teach us ways to treat our patients with compassion and respect. Our residency program encourages open communication between residents and faculty and are continually seeking to implement feedback multiple times through the year. I look forward to deepening friendships and enjoying all that Los Angeles has to offer!"

When I was applying to residency programs, Cedars-Sinai was my first choice, and I'm so glad to have trained here. The program leaders are very receptive, my colleagues are caring with plenty of camaraderie to go around, and the training here is world-class. I love our 4+1 schedule and the Primary Care track, which has given me the opportunity to grow as a clinician while also maintaining a great life-work balance. It's also amazing to live in LA with so much to see and do. I recommend Cedars-Sinai with all my heart!"

I came to Cedars-Sinai to practice at the forefront of healthcare alongside world-class leaders in medicine. From the beginning, I have been impressed by the diversity of clinical and research opportunities that are a part of your normal experience as a resident. Throughout my time here, I've been incredibly blown away by the staff and community at Cedars-Sinai: from my co-residents, the nursing staff, the attendings, and everyone else dedicated to the patients. I'm amazed and inspired by how we all individually use our strengths, our time, and our emotional and physical energy for the singular purpose of healing patients. And to have all our efforts result in a "thank you"—there is no greater gift we can receive in this profession. I feel so fortunate to be a part of this community that truly loves the patients and their families. And it excites me to see how much we will grow—and have already grown—in our compassion and dedication towards them."

I came to Cedars-Sinai with the goal of being a physician scientist in the field of infectious diseases and I could not ask for a better environment for my medical and research training. Practicing in a quaternary medical center in metropolitan Los Angeles, I'm privileged to learn from a diverse patient population and, in particular, managing and treating patients with HIV/AIDS and opportunistic infections. In terms of research, the CS-RISE program has connected me with clinical investigators doing impactful work in hospital epidemiology and COVID-19 immunology and has also provided financial support and protected research time for me to work on these projects during residency. Above all, the people that I get to work with, from my co-residents to my attendings, constantly reaffirm my decision to rank Cedars-Sinai among my top internal medicine residency training programs."

Yumiko Taguchi, MD, PhD

I moved from Arizona to Los Angeles to begin residency without a support system - my husband matched at a transitional year program in San Diego, my family remained in Arizona, and I knew exactly 1 person in the greater Los Angeles area. However, since my first day as an intern at Cedars-Sinai, I have experienced overwhelming support from the internal medicine program and my co-residents. Whether it was the clinic attending who showed up with cake on my birthday or the admin, chiefs, and co-intern that ensured my call was covered to attend my grandfather's funeral - I cannot say enough positive things about the people in our program. On top of all of this, I have received clinical training that has been nothing short of excellent in an environment with boundless research opportunities. As a future physician-scientist, I feel incredibly fortunate to train at a program that not only propels my aspirations in medicine and research, but supports my personal well-being along the way."

I've only been here for a short amount of time as an intern, but I can confidently say that coming to train at Cedars-Sinai was the best decision I've ever made. It is a such an energetic, collaborative environment which has greatly benefited my development as a young physician. We have such a wealth of knowledge and training here at our disposal from physicians who want nothing more than to mentor young physicians. From my seniors, to fellows and the leadership of our residency, I have felt supported, encouraged, and empowered. I've enjoyed every experience I've had thus far, from reviewing the various ways to treat cardiogenic shock while on a night rotation, to finding the best places to enjoy a sunny afternoon in LA with my co-interns. I have made friends both in my residency and in other training programs that I know I can count on for the rest of my life."

In my first two months at Cedars-Sinai, I've already learned so much from the residents, faculty, and my patients. I’ve gained a real sense of autonomy as an intern, of course, with the exceptional support from my senior residents and attendings. In a short time, I’ve also had the pleasure of forming some wonderful friendships. And I would be remiss to not mention the amazing perk of having Starbucks right in the hospital!"

My training at Cedars-Sinai has been phenomenal since day 1 of intern year. I originally chose Cedars-Sinai for its supportive environment, excellent training, perfect work-life balance, and large Spanish-speaking population at Saban Clinic. In the past couple months, I have learned how extremely supportive our program directors and faculty are, especially in regards to our wellbeing and learning. The education I receive is outstanding, especially during attending rounds and caring for our very diverse population. There are a plethora of opportunities in research and mentorship with renowned faculty as well. Our very knowledgeable residents (whom I hang out with frequently!) are the epitome of compassionate, patient-centered care, and I could not be prouder to train alongside them and everyone here at Cedars-Sinai! Lastly, Cedars-Sinai is located in the middle of amazing food and so many fun things to do!"

The program offers a wide array of unique clinical experiences that offer residents an opportunity to serve the very diverse population of Los Angeles. I have been particularly impressed by the institutional focus on serving the underserved and the plentiful opportunities for residents to be involved in the care of the city's most vulnerable patients. Additionally, the program leadership is very responsive to feedback, and they are genuinely invested in each resident's growth and success. There is a strong culture of mentorship within the program, and I have always been able to get the support I need to continue developing into the best physician I can be. I am so grateful to be training at Cedars-Sinai!"

Over the past three months at Cedars-Sinai, I was struck by the vast number of opportunities to learn and grow as a future internal medicine physician. High yield didactics during morning/noon conference, hands-on teaching and mentorship by highly motivated faculty and senior residents, experiences in the simulation lab, numerous research and medical education opportunities, as well as the opportunity to serve an incredibly diverse patient population here in Los Angeles—Cedars-Sinai has it all. And beyond all else, the camaraderie and support I have felt from everyone within the program, from my fellow co-interns to program leadership, has been second to none. I am grateful to be able to work alongside and learn from this amazing group of people over the next three years!"
