Training & Curriculum

• Extensive one-on-one teaching
• Thirteen rotations of four-weeks each
• ACGME approved ESIR (Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology) curriculum
• Additional select rotations at hospitals serving different patient populations, including Children's Hospital of Los Angeles for pediatric radiology and UCLA for chest radiology
• Fourth-year residents are provided with substantial elective time to develop a subspecialty of interest and to assume greater responsibility in that area
• Extensive research opportunities
• Sponsorship to attend annual meetings, if research accepted for presentation (Radiological Society of North America, Society of Interventional Radiology, Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, American Society of Neuroradiology, Association of University Radiologists and the American Roentgen Ray Society)
• Participation in the four-week radiologic pathology course sponsored by the American Institute for Radiologic Pathology

In addition, the radiology resident is the liaison with the house staff. Reviewing studies with house staff and discussing imaging procedures provide a basis of experience for future interactions with clinicians.

An active program of interdepartmental and departmental conferences and seminars is maintained, including the following:

• Daily subspecialty conferences
• Monthly radiology, pathology and neuroradiology conferences
• A bi-weekly, five-hour lecture series at the UCLA
• Additional conferences, including basic science courses
• Bi-weekly physics lectures
• Weekly Brant and Helms conferences
• Monthly journal club
• Board review sessions
• Introductory call lecture series during July, August and September to develop the clinical foundation and imaging skills required in emergencies and in-house calls

The department has access to the entire American College of Radiology learning files, an extensive selection of audiovisual materials, essential journals, textbooks and other educational materials.

All graduates elect to pursue fellowships. Thanks to superior preparation, most graduates have been successful in securing fellowships in the subspecialty and institution of their choice. Most of these physicians go into private practice, and about 20 percent develop successful careers in academics throughout the United States.
