Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship

The Cedars-Sinai Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship is a one-year, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited fellowship that trains anesthesiologists to become experts in the perioperative care of patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgeries and procedures.

The Cedars-Sinai Smidt Heart Institute, one of the top cardiology and heart surgery centers in the Western United States, provides a diverse and complex patient population, an advanced program in mechanical circulatory devices and a catheterization laboratory that performs novel interventional techniques for both valve disorders and heart failure. Cedars-Sinai has a robust heart and lung transplantation program and every year since 2010, the Smidt Heart Institute has performed more heart transplants than any other medical center in the country.

In addition to advanced training in the management of cardiothoracic diseases and related surgeries, fellows become skilled experts in echocardiography. Trainees learn advanced image acquisition and interpretation of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), in both 2-D and 3-D modes. They use their expertise in TEE to guide interventions in the operating room and catheterization laboratory.

Fellows are expected, with mentoring by the faculty, to develop an area of academic interest during their fellowship year. They will have the opportunity to present their work at national conferences and to pursue funding for their work. Those interested in research are able to dedicate two months of elective time to a chosen research project.

At the end of the Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship program, the fellow will have exceeded the professional requirements defined by the Residency Review Committee, the American Board of Anesthesiology and the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists.
