Purchasing Health Insurance on Your Own

I Buy Health Insurance on My Own

If you purchase a private (also known as commercial) policy for yourself or your family, you have two options:

  • Purchase a plan through the Covered California health benefit exchange
  • Buy a private plan through an insurance agent or a health plan directly outside of the exchange

Either way, please choose your plan carefully to ensure you have full coverage for care from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Marina Del Rey Hospital and many of our physicians.

There have been many changes for the 2018 plan year—including Anthem pulling individual and family plan offerings in Southern California.

The open enrollment period for private insurance policies has closed for 2018. You may be able to make changes or enroll in a plan if you have had a qualifying life event (marriage, baby, etc.).

Individual and Family Plans for Cedars-Sinai in 2018

The following insurer provides individual and family plans with coverage for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Marina Del Rey Hospital and many of our physicians:

If you choose to purchase your individual health insurance through the exchange and want the option of receiving full coverage for care provided by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Marina Del Rey Hospital, and many of our physicians, you will need to choose:

  • Blue Shield of California PPO plans (all metal levels—for example, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze)

None of the other plans in the Covered California health benefit exchange will allow you to receive full coverage for care provided by Cedars-Sinai and our physicians.

If you qualify for and accept a subsidy from the federal government to help with your premium, you will be limited to the policies sold by Covered California.

To learn more or to purchase your insurance through the exchange, visit coveredca.com or call 800-300-1506.

If you choose to purchase your individual health insurance directly from an insurance company or agent and want the option of receiving full coverage for care provided by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Marina Del Rey Hospital, and many of our physicians, you will need to choose:

  • Blue Shield of California PPO plans (all metal levels — e.g., Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze)

If you have a grandfathered plan with Blue Shield of California or Anthem Blue Cross, you will be able to keep coverage under that grandfathered plan in 2018 as long as you continue to pay premiums under the plan.

*Information updated Oct. 18, 2017.

Anthem Blue Cross has discontinued their non-grandfathered* individual medical plans in Southern California counties for 2018.

*Grandfathered plans must have been purchased prior to March 23, 2010. You will be able to keep coverage on these plans if you continue to pay the premiums.

*Information updated June 21, 2018.

Silver-level plans purchased through the Covered California exchange may be subject to a surcharge given the ongoing uncertainty around cost-sharing reduction payments from the federal government.

Please use the following information to guide your decision:

  • If you do not receive a subsidy and want to purchase a silver-level plan, you may have a lower premium by purchasing from an insurance company or broker (not through Covered California).
  • If you do receive a subsidy and want to purchase a silver-level plan, you may get a better deal purchasing insurance through Covered California.

We offer a variety of financial assistance programs that can help our patients with out-of-pocket costs. These programs are available to a wide range of incomes.

Effective July 1, 2017, California has implemented consumer protection laws protecting patients from receiving “surprise bills” from physicians in certain circumstances when a physician is providing services at an in-network facility. If Cedars-Sinai is considered in-network and a physician is out of network and providing non-emergent services, unless receiving prior consent, the physician might be legally restricted in the amount he/she can bill patients beyond what a patient would expect under the terms of their commercial health plan. The law is complex, and there are several exceptions to the rules. If you have questions or complaints, please contact the California Department of Managed Health Care at 888-466-2219.
